According to a Spanish study, referees in Spain get wages and financial gains for taking part in managing matches in Europe and worldwide.
The fact that Spanish referees get more money than their colleagues in other European leagues was also confirmed by the Spanish daily “Marca.”
As of September 1, 2020, referees in Spain will be considered professionals, which will require them to devote all of their time to football without worrying about other tasks. They will also be bound by contracts with the local federation of the game and the “La Liga” association.
According to the publication, the referees in Spain are the best on the old European continent. This claim is supported by the fact that they are asked to officiate more games at the level of European clubs and teams than their counterparts.
The Spanish League pays its referees a monthly salary of 12,500 euros, plus 4,200 euros for the match’s arena referee and 2,100 euros for the video assistant referee (VAR), regardless of whether the match is in “La Liga” or the King’s Cup.
In one football season of “La Liga,” each referee is tasked with officiating 20 games in addition to the 10 he watches in the video room.
Additionally, every Spanish referee in the Champions League earns 7,000 euros for each game he oversees, which is the same amount earned by the referees in charge of the most illustrious European championships in England, Italy, Germany, France, and Portugal.
And “Marca” said that Matteo Lahoz, the contentious referee, will be the most successful of his countrymen in 2022 after earning 335 thousand euros, which includes his payment for managing the 2022 World Cup games in Qatar.
Regarding professionalism and monetary reward, the situation in Europe differs significantly from that in Spain, however there are referees in other nations that want payment in exchange for image rights or when they receive the international symbol.
And “Marca” claims that the English Premier League referees, who work for a highly lucrative league, make less money than their Spanish counterparts.
The English referee makes 8,500 euros per month in salary, plus 2,200 euros for each game, for a total of 200,000 euros every season, including his participation in Europe.
Each referee in Italy makes a salary of 3,800 euros each game, with an average of 15 to 16 games per season. However, the salary is based on the number of games and image rights, with a minimum earning of 45,000 euros and a maximum earning of 80,000 euros.
The assistants are paid 1,000 euros for each match, while the fourth referee is paid 500 euros. The video referee is paid 1,500 euros, while his assistant is paid 750 euros.
Compared to France, which pays the referee a monthly salary of 6,000 euros in addition to 2,900 euros for each match, Germany pays the referee 5,000 euros every match, 2,500 euros for assistants, and 1,250 euros for the fourth referee.
